To Neill Brown, Esq., Philadelphus, North Carolina

Waynesville, Georgia

March 16, 1835

Neill Brown, Esq.

My Dear Uncle,

I am this day about to start to Tennessee to se my relations in that country. I shall spend a few days with my Brother Elias in Savannah and then proceed to Camden, South Carolina and from thence the nearest route to Uncle Hugh and Duncan's residence. I write you this now because I am in doubt whether I shall be able to take Robeson County in my route, however pleasing it would be to me, to visit you and my other relations there.

We have lately received the disagreeable and afflicting news of my Brother Joseph's death. He was travelling in Louisiana and died at Alexandria on Red River on the 5th of January last of (as was said in the letter we received) a lingering illness of five weeks.

Mother's health is not good at present. She keeps up and about, but is quite weak and feeble and is much afflicted in mind for the loss we have recently sustained. Father is in very good health. He weighs about 200 lbs. and for his age, retains his strength and activity remarkably well. Sister Nancy and her daughter, Mary Ann, are both in good health. They all send their love to you and also Brother Elias, who is now here. Father and Mother both requests to hear from you as soon as convenient. Please make my affectionate regards to all my cousins.

I am very sincerely, your nephew,

John Fort, Jr.
