| Hugh Brown was the son of Neill Brown and Ann Smith. He lived in the Philadelphus, North Carolina community in Robeson County, North Carolina. Hugh Brown married Catherine Black. This page include a letter written 1 May 1840 from J A Brown who lived in Talladega, Alabama to Duncan Black, who was Catherine Black Brown's brother. In his letter he mentions the guardianship for his daughter, Mary. He also mentions the spiritual conditions in the country, and appeals to Duncan to "forsake the company of dissolute and profane persons, as well as all scenes of riot and dissipation. I have in the course of my life been familiar with such, and if I came off without being sunk in vices of low and degrading shades of character, it was entirely owing to the restraining Spirit of Grace, and the prayers of pious friends. For the Scriptures assure us that the prayers of the righteous availeth much. The dangers that we have narrowly escaped, I would cordially admonish you to be aware of." Mary Holmes, a sister to Ann Holmes wife of Archibald Smith Brown, writes a note from Lumberton, NC to Hugh Brown, brother of Archibald Smith Brown.
