Arch Buie Letter

Neill Brown, oldest son of Hugh Brown and Mary Buie, lived in Robeson County, North Carolina.  He was a "friend of his country" during the Revolutionary War, helping to supply goods to the patriots. He helped the patriots during the Battle of Ralph Swamp near Red Springs, and no doubt on many other occasions.

Neill Brown was one of the two Representatives to the North Carolina General Assembly from the newly formed Robeson County (1787), and served from 1788-1790.  He was a delegate to the Hillsborough Convention were the United States Constitution was considered by North Carolina.  He also opposed the establishment of Raleigh, NC as the state capitol, preferring Fayetteville, NC on the banks of the Cape Fear River.

Neill Brown was a tailor in addition to being a farmer.  The Bill of Parcel document is for materials, no doubt to be used by Neill in making some suits.

Neill Brown was an early family historian, and made many entries in his Journal recording family births, deaths, marriages.  There are also records of births of children born to slaves.  In addition, there are some interesting entries regarding the weather, the sighting of a meteor shower, the results of a hurricane, and other occurrences.  The journal contains some remedies for all types of aliments.

Neill Brown died 11 December 1835.  His Will is recorded in Roberson County, North Carolina, and his Obituary appeared in the Fayetteville Observer.

Archibald Buie Letter - This transcribed letter is from the Rev. Archibald Buie who married Catherine Brown, daughter of Neill Brown and Ann Smith.  At the time of the letter 1813, Rev. Archiald Buie and Catherine Brown were living in Putnam County, Georgia.
